If Jesus is all we have, He is all we need.
Sometimes when we look at the bible and we read all the different depictions of life in the past, there's a lack of connection.
A connection with the realities of our present.
Many pastors try to fold it back in, through the latest news and current affairs of the world.
From wars, protests, disaster, politics, etc.
It might not be enough. The world has changed more and departed so much further away from what it used to be.
Humans are constant, in terms of our fallenness, and many a good pastor continue to latch on to this everlasting truth. The same that God is eternal. Preach this and people will always relate.
Yet when the message enters more temporal truths, sometimes the message may be hard to relate to.
For example,
If we were to face a period in the wilderness. Today, even getting into the wilderness is very much a choice. And even if people are facing their wilderness, how do we relate it very much to our lives which never rest. We seemed to have embarked on trains, and disembark at crowded stations so much that our lives are noisy and a wilderness moment is rare for many of us. Contrast this to the many in olden days where so many parts of the world were uncolonized and most of travelling was done on foot if not on camel or donkey. How do we relate? Should we also walk on foot?
Some would say, swim against the tide, for the tide brings you out to see. Swim against the world. How do you swim when there's a cruise liner going in the other path. Even keeping still can be a challenge.
It's funny sometimes when we look back and see how far we have gone. We look and laud sustainability in my world, after destroying so much. Even little acts such as planting a tree are so glorified even after we have cut down so many.
Maybe a fundamental shift in our lives is to get off the bus or the train and start walking. My favourite song that touched me so much was the song "slow down". I understand why again.
Everyone is chasing sometimes in this world. They are. A particular role. A particular status. A particular identity. It never stops. And everyone uses everything in their chase. A faster car. A more shiny medal. A few more likes with Gold Membership or paid ads. Yet the reality is Jesus just walked. And prayed. And at times sat on a donkey.
So maybe, we too must walk. Like the Emmaus road.
And find the whisper that is drowned out by the winds of change.
Walk in the wilderness and not let it be taken away from us.
See miracles before it just becomes a movie.
Take truth as not just an idea.
We are shackled to a world that is spiralling towards its death, aren't we? When will we be able to ever break free?
